Time flies when you’re not blogging. A quick five-line recap to catch up to the point we’re at from then to now.
1. Mediocre ’08 season.
2. Saints sign Mike Bell during mediocre ’08 season.
3. Defensive genius Gregg Williams joins Saints’ staff.
4. Saints sign veteran safety Darren Sharper.
5. Holy hell unleashed upon the NFL.
Why now, Saints Guy? How dare you come back after we’ve opened the 2009 season 12-0! We’re four away from running the regular season table! Are you mad? DON’T RUIN THIS FOR US!
I’m the exact same way. No joke, I’m not cutting my hair until they lose. So far, so good, right?
(Side note: do NOT ask the Saints Babe what she thinks. Of course, she loves her Saints, but she’d rather have a husband who doesn’t look homeless. Just know, as important as my marriage is, the Saints… well…)
Same goes for the blog. We’re 12-0 and the Saints Guy has been incommunicado. Why fix what ain’t broke?
Truth be told, this isn’t feeling like a normal Saints year. Haven't we always coughed up the one's we were supposed to win?
To recap, we’ve already won nearly every type of game: blowouts (Detroit, at Philly, at Tampa Bay, and New England, the biggest game in franchise history), the “let-down” game after New England (at Washington), after the bye week (NYG, [we’re notorious for losing after a bye]), trailing by two touchdowns or more (Carolina, at Miami), the SI cover jinx (Atlanta), sloppy play (at St. Louis), and even regular wins (NYJ and at Buffalo). It doesn’t feel like we need our yearly superstitions or voodoo dolls with the current roster and coaching staff.
On a whim (okay, after much prodding by Hoss), I looked back at my column total since the start of The Saints Guy—16. And like our Saints, 16 just isn’t going to be enough. I needed to be back.
That’s why it’s okay to return. That’s why I shouldn’t have taken all this time off anyway. I should have been here all along. And thanks to Hoss, I’ve rectified the situation. And now, no matter what, we have four regular season games left to go, and we’re two games ahead for home-field advantage. We can end the mumbo-jumbo of thinking about past seasons, past curses, and current superstitions.
I think our talented, superstar, face-of-the-WHO DAT-nation franchise quarterback said it best after the Redskins’ game:
“I definitely believe in destiny and I believe in karma and what goes around comes around. We’ve been on the other side of this deal probably too many times. Maybe it’s our time that we start catching some of the breaks and start being the team that wins them like this in the end.”
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I'm back, baby.
